July 8

7/8 Amsterdam to Denmark

We awoke at 5:30 a.m. and got walking to the central train station.  We gave ourselves more than enough time to hop on our first train.

This began a series of train hopping, 5 in total, all navigated by Karen. Without her we might have had to stay in Amsterdam and wait for the overnight train.  So from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. we rode the rails, but when we got off in Kolding, Denmark, Sara was there to pick us up!

Two things about our communicating with people abroad: We had our smart phones, but we did not have an international plan.  We relied on Wifi in certain areas to send the people we needed to meet up with messages.  However, this particular time when we were heading to Denmark, I had asked a Danish guy who was sitting near us on the train if I could use his phone to text Sara.  It worked out really well because, although we were on opposite sides of the station, we all pretty much got there at the same time!
Here's a little background on how we know Sara: Sara was an exchange student at my high school my freshman year.  We played soccer together, were both in chorus, and went on a few trips together back then.  When I told her we were possibly going to be visiting Denmark, she graciously offered us a place to stay! Sara lives in Odense, which is the second largest city in Denmark and is located on the middle island between Aarhus and Copenhagen.  Denmark was one of our favorite spots to visit, not only because it had a lot to see, but Sara's hospitality was incomparable!

We had a lovely meal waiting for us at Jacob's (Sara's boyfriend) parents' home.  We had steak, two excellent salads, potatoes, and wine.

After dinner we drove to Sara's apartment where there was a full air mattress awaiting us.  We could only sleep after Karen and Sara had relived high school memories.
